چکیده

14 To examine possible association between dental amalgam fillings and mercury burden, we measured the mercury concentrations in scalp hair samples from 74 female Japanese subjects aged 26-64 years who had a dietary habit of little fish-consumption. The hair mercury concentrations in the subjects with multiple amalgam fillings were significantly higher than those in the subjects with no amalgam fillings, and correlated with the number of amalgam fillings in the following regression equation: log Hg = 0.084 amalgam fillings + 3.377 (r = 0.339, p = 0.003). In addition, multiple regression analysis demonstrated that the hair mercury concentrations were significantly correlated with the amalgam fillings (r = 0.292; p = 0.014) and age (r = 0.284; p = 0.017) but not significantly with the body mass index (r = 0.060). A regression equation of log Hg = 0.071 amalgam fillings + 0.011 age + 0.006 BMI + 2.72 was obtained (r = 0.447), with 0.200 of the determination coefficient. These findings suggest that the dental amalgam fillings positively influence mercury accumulation in the hair and also, probably, in the body. تجمع جیوه در مو و ناخن انسان: آمالگام دندانی به عنوان فاکتور اصلی مواجهه

Background: Dental amalgam, a mixture of approximately 50% mercury with silver, tin, zinc and copper in varying ratios, is a major source of mercury pollution in the general population not occupationally exposed. The toxicity of mercury is enhanced because it is so readily absorbed, with around 90-100% of mercury vapor being absorbed through the oral mucosa. The aim of the current study is to e...

Mercury in Hair of Mothers and Infants: Influencing Factors Assessment in the Southern shores of the Caspian Sea (Iran)

Background: Mercury (Hg) is a hazardous metal responsible for environmental contamination and human intoxication. Methyl mercury bio-accumulation through food chain can be responsible for chronic mercury exposure of South Caspian Sea communities with a diet rich in fish. Uncertainties about exposure levels that could have damaging consequences for nervous system development of infants makes b...

Increased Release of Mercury from Dental Amalgam Fillings due to Maternal Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields as a Possible Mechanism for the High Rates of Autism in the Offspring: Introducing a Hypothesis

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), factors such as growing electricity demand, ever-advancing technologies and changes in social behaviour have led to steadily increasing exposure to man-made electromagnetic fields.  Dental amalgam fillings are among the major sources of exposure to elemental mercury vapour in the general population. Although it was previously believed that low ...

Increased Zn/Glutathione Levels and Higher Superoxide Dismutase-1 Activity as Biomarkers of Oxidative Stress in Women with Long-Term Dental Amalgam Fillings: Correlation between Mercury/Aluminium Levels (in Hair) and Antioxidant Systems in Plasma

BACKGROUND The induction of oxidative stress by Hg can affect antioxidant enzymes. However, epidemiological studies have failed to establish clear association between dental fillings presence and health problems. OBJECTIVES To determine whether heavy metals (in hair), antioxidant enzymes (SOD-1) and glutathione levels could be affected by the chronic presence of heavy metals in women who had ...

Some results on Hg content in hair in different populations in Albania.

The mercury content in hair, for exposed dental workers and unexposed groups of people living in Albania was studied. The influence of factors such as age, sex, body weight, fish consumption in the diet, number of dental amalgam fillings and time exposed to mercury, was determined. The mean value of mercury content in hair for the subjects under study (0.705 microg/g) was found to be lower than...
